Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso will sit out Spain’s Confederations Cup campaign in Brazil due to injury.
The former Liverpool star has been struggling with a groin injury and missed Real’s final two matches of the Liga season.
He will not recover in time to represent his country in Brazil later this month, with Spain coach Vicente del Bosque leaving him out of the final 23-man squad, along with Benat Etxebarria of Real Betis and Manchester City’s Javi Garcia. Spain are drawn in the same group as Nigeria, Uruguay and Tahiti.
