The Netherlands are deservedly through to the semifinals of the world cup after going up against a resilient Costa Rican side.
Costa Rica relied heavily on luck and their goalkeeper, Navas as the Dutch controlled the game for the entire ninety minutes and most of the extra time. Netherlands struggled to create clear cut chances in the first half but Wesley Scnijder hit the post and Van Persie missed two sitters in the second half and Kuyt lost his balance with the game drawing to an end.
In extra time the Costa Ricans threatened a bit but when the Dutch broke free, they looked menacing and Scnijder saw another shot cannon off the cross bar. With seconds left in extra time, Van Gaal took off Cillisen and brought on Tim Krul and the Newcastle United man became the hero stopping two of Costa Ricas five spot kicks and sending Netherlands into the semifinals
