As difficult as it has been for actors/actresses who have tried to cross carpet from acting to singing in Nigeria, I must say Tonto Dikeh had promises. After a series of singles that were seriously criticised, Tonto didn’t relent but kept working hard to improve and step up her game. Tonto Dikeh with all her connections was gradually finding a place in the industry before teaming up with superstar D’banj’s DB Record.

At first, considering D’banj’s credentials and connections, there was that notion that Tonto Dikeh’s music career was about to be rescued. The celebrated first lady of DB Records didn’t take too much time before releasing her first single under the label ‘Sugar Rush’. Some loved the song while others in their usual way criticised the song but the major set back was neither the criticism nor the comparing the song with Dorobucci, but D’banj’s poor promotional techniques.

Artistes signed under D’banj have suffered set back due to his lack of massive promotion that is also evident in the less than average ratings of his songs. D’banj has been too busy running around the world and haven’t devoted enough time to the growth of his record label and hence, his artistes have paid the huge price.

Tonto Dikeh who with all the available resources and opportunities in DB Records should have been able to improve her music has experienced a downward spiral in her music career without any hopes of seeing the light anytime soon. As 2015 gears towards the time of the year when artistes will need to stamp their presence in the industry, we can only hope that D’banj and his team make plans for his record label artistes.
