Babangida Says Renewed Biafra Agitations Are A Distraction, Promises To Vote For Igbo President In 2019
In what could be termed his most incisive and extensive interview in recent times, ex-military dictator, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) has opened up on everything from Biafra to President Muhammadu Buhari.
Babangida, the self-styled ‘evil genius’, spoke to The Interview in Minna, the Niger State capital in a two-hour interview in the December issue of the magazine out this week.
Speaking on the renewed agitation for Biafra, the ex-military president said, “We do not need this distraction now…” but added that, “I will vote for an Igbo president in 2019, if I find one”.
On his relationship with President Buhari, who had accused him of staging the 1985 coup to save himself and General Aliyu Gusau, Babangida recalled a peace parley initiated by former Abia State Governor, Orji Uzor Kalu in 2006, as proof that all is well between him and the president.
“One thing you guys in the media want is for us to be exchanging words with each other each time we see”, Babangida, who recently clocked 74, said.
The former military ruler, who annulled the 1993 presidential election, also spoke on how he received the news of the death of the presumed winner of the election, Chief MKO Abiola, saying, he “was shocked,” but had no regrets.
“Do you believe he (Abiola) died of natural causes?”
“I should know? I didn’t serve the tea…!”
