Following his swearing-in on Wednesday and assignment as the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, many Nigerians have been listing their expectations of Mr. Babatunde Fashola (SAN), including Second Republic Senator, Ayo Fasanmi.
While most Nigerians would love to see a radical improvement in power supply, Pa Fasanmi is more interested in the former Lagos State governor completing the rehabilitation of the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway, which has been in a state of disrepair for years.
Describing the road as the busiest in the country, the All Progressives Congress chieftain said the 126.5-kilometre road is very important to the nation’s economic interests.
Fasanmi also commended President Muhammadu Buhari for finding ministers from the Southwest geo-political zone worthy of challenging portfolios in his cabinet, expressing the confidence that they will not disappoint.
The octogenarian, who was reacting to the assignment of portfolios to the ministers on Wednesday, said Fashola, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, the Minister of Solid Minerals, and his Heath, Communications and Finance counterparts; Prof. Isaac Adewole, Barr. Adebayo Shittu and Mrs. Kemi Adeosun respectively, will live up to expectation as change agents.
Urging Fashola to address the rot in infrastructure nationwide, Fasanmi noted that his antecedent as former governor of Lagos State, where he was widely acknowledged as having performed creditably well, motivated the president to saddle him with the arduous responsibility of overseeing what used to be three ministries now rolled into one.
According to the elder statesman, “Lagos/Ibadan Expressway is a challenge for Buhari and his team. The Minister of Works is up to the task. In fact, our ministers from the Southwest – Fayemi, Shittu, Adewole, Adeosun and Daramola, are great assets. The region has confidence in their ability. They have performed in positions of responsibilities before as governors, administrators and politicians”.
Citing Fashola as an example, Fasanmi said the ex-governor is a man after his own heart, describing him as hardworking and unassuming.
“He deserves the portfolios, having raised the level of governance in Lagos to a high pedestal. These ministers will actually change, perform and excel”, he added.
Fasanmi also pleaded with Nigerians to give the APC-led federal government the necessary support to bring about the much desired change.
