Lai Mohammed-Information-MinisterFederal Government-owned media organizations have been criticized for walking in the shadows of their private-owned counterparts.

The Nigeria Television Authority, Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, Voice of Nigeria and News Agency of Nigeria are some of the media organizations funded by the Federal Government.

However, when compared to their more recently established private counterparts, both local and foreign, the government-owned media organizations usually play second fiddle.

Calling for an attitudinal change and rededication to service, the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed on Thursday, said the public owned media houses are not considered credible because their staff have thrown professionalism to the wind while also showing relegating editorial independence to the background.

Mr. Mohammed stated this in Abuja during his inaugural meeting with heads of parastatals under the ministry.

The minister also said the government-owned media organizations always complain of paucity of funds, forgetting that there is a link between credibility and profitability.

“Advertisers will surely flock to more credible media organizations, and of course it is also true that content drives advertisement”, he said.

“Public broadcasters have mortgaged their credibility on the altar of political correctness, and yet they are endowed with highly-trained and well-qualified personnel, better infrastructure and a wide reach”, Mohammed said.

Mr. Mohammed further stated that Federal Government-owned media organizations would receive leadership in a manner that will make them to become the first source of information, so that they can function more effectively as a medium for the change mantra of the Muhammadu Buhari Administration, while also regaining their lost glory in the process.
