Bukola-SarakiTemporary reprieve came the way of embattled Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki as the Supreme Court on Thursday ordered the Code of Conduct Tribunal to suspend his ongoing trial.

Saraki is standing trial on a 13-count charge for alleged false declaration of assets brought against him by the Federal Government while he was Governor of Kwara State.

It would be recalled that at the last hearing of the tribunal, the Senate president’s lawyers, including Saka Issau (SAN), Ahmed Raji (SAN), Mahmud Magaji (SAN) and 23 others, reportedly walked out on the chairman, Justice Danladi Umar, following his refusal to grant their application for stay of proceedings in Saraki’s trial.

Saraki, through his lawyer, Mr. Magaji, prayed the tribunal to adjourn the trial and await the decision of the appeal he has lodged before the Supreme C‎ourt.

In arriving at its decision some few hours ago, the apex court agreed that the prosecution should exercise restraint and await the outcome of rhe appeal filed by Saraki.

Counsel to the FG, Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, had earlier given an undertaking that the prosecution would not go ahead with Saraki’s trial.

With this latest development, the trial of the Senate president, which was adjourned to November 19 by the CCT, might not hold.
