NigerianSenateThe Senate on Thursday gave the Minister of Petroleum, President Muhammadu Buhari, two weeks to end the lingering fuel scarcity across the country.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Petroleum (Downstream), Senator Uche Ekwunife, who gave the ultimatum when top officials of the Petroleum Ministry led by the Permanent Secretary, Jamila Shu’ara appeared before the committee, said how the fuel scarcity would be resolved within the time frame, is not the Senate’s concern.

Sen. Ekwunife (PDP/Anambra South), further said the petroleum minister must ensure that fuel was sold to the public at the official rate of N87 per litre.

She, however, did not say what steps the Senate would take should the minister, in this case, President Buhari, fail to resolve the problems within two weeks.

A visibly displeased Ekwunife told the ministry’s officials in no uncertain terms that the fuel crisis was unnecessary, adding: “We are mandating the Minister of Petroleum Resources, the Permanent Secretary and heads of agencies to stop this fuel scarcity in two weeks.

“We are giving a target now. We don’t want to know how you would achieve it. Nigerians want to see an end to this fuel scarcity”.
