Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has hinted that the Foundation to be established by immediate past President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, is a form of penitence by the latter to show remorse for his actions while in office.
Obasanjo and Jonathan used to have a robust relationship until their public spat in December 2013 when the former wrote a letter titled “Before it is too late” to his former political godson.
The ex-president personally responded to the letter by his predecessor in what was largely seen as the beginning of a battle of wits between former political godfather and son.
The result of that battle was the failed re-election bid of Mr. Jonathan and the inauguration of President Muhammadu Buhari, who Mr. Obasanjo openly endorsed.
In his latest letter, dated October 12, 2015, which was in response to an earlier one written by Mr. Jonathan on September 22, informing him of his plans to set up a Foundation through which he would continue to service humanity, Mr. Obasanjo advised his former political godson to consider the Foundation as a platform through which he can heal his conscience.
The letter, exclusively obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, also conveyed Obasanjo’s congratulations to Jonathan on his successful handover to President Buhari.
“I am happy to note that you had a good rest and time with your family during the break. I hope you also had time to reflect and see what lessons you have learned and what you can bequeath to others. All of us who have had experience in our service to the nation and to humanity must not put it under the bushel.
“I have to commend you and your Foundation, Goodluck Jonathan Foundation, for the faith you continue to have in Nigeria. Maybe seeking how to be better and more serviceable to the nation and humanity is also a form of penitence and soul-searching to give conscience a relief and to show remorse”, ex-President Obasanjo wrote in the letter.
While wishing Jonathan well in his future endeavours, Mr. Obasanjo said “If there is any area you feel I can be of help, you should not hesitate to call on me”.
