Senator-Roland-OwieA former Chief Whip of the Senate in the 4th National Assembly, Senator Rowland Owie, has made a passionate plea to President Muhammadu Buhari to order the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, to reduce tension in the country.

The former senator, who urged the president to dialogue with pro-Biafra agitators, asked Buhari to distance himself from those alleging that the IPOB is a militant group.

Senator Owie also pleaded with President Buhari to do all within his power to keep the nation together without alienating any group.

“I wish to remind President Muhammadu Buhari that every elected leader in Nigeria becomes a prisoner of palace jesters around him and become isolated from realities outside Aso Rock. President Buhari should open the prison door now and come out and face the reality”, Owie said in a statement Saturday.

While urging Mr. Buhari to release Kanu immediately and dialogue with the pro-Biafra agitators, Owie advised the president to ignore the counsel of “palace jesters” who are telling him that members of IPOB are militants like Boko Haram.

“They are not. While Boko Haram leadership is not visible, the IPOB leadership is visible. Buhari should act now”, he stressed.

Senator Owie, who represented Edo South on the platform of Peoples Democratic Party in the Nigerian Senate from 1999 to 2003, recounted a Bini parable that says “the king that folds his hands while his palace is burning, ends up being a tenant”.
