The Kano State Hisbah Board has intercepted a trailer load of 24,000 bottles of beer and other assorted alcoholic beverages.
The Hisbah Baord is a religious police in the northern city of Kano responsible for the enforcement of Sharia.
The Director-General of Hisbah, Dr Abba Sufi, who made the disclosure yesterday, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the vehicle carrying the beer was arrested on Murtala Mohammed Way at 1:00 a.m on Saturday.
He said that the driver was arrested, while the vehicle and the bottles of assorted beer were moved to the premises of the board, adding that the driver would be arraigned on Monday.
Sufi, however, warned people who are in the habit of bringing alcoholic beverages and other intoxicating items into the state to desist from doing so, stressing the state government’s resolve to deal severely with anyone caught in the illegal act.
The Hisbah boss said that it was against the Sharia to transport, bring or sell beer and other alcoholic beverages in the state.
