Southern Ijaw is the largest of the eight local government areas that make up Bayelsa State.
The INEC on Saturday postponed elections in the area till Sunday as a result of violent clashes between gun-toting youths of the Peoples Democratic Party and All Progressives Congress, abduction of electoral officials and ballot box snatching.
However, it appears despite the postponement of the polls by a day to allow for calm and provision of adequate security to allow the election take place, the situation has largely remained the same.
It was learnt that due to the unconducive atmosphere to conduct peaceful polls in the local government area, the Bayelsa governorship elections would be declared inconclusive.
The electoral agency believed what transpired in Southern Ijaw ran contrary to global best practices in election conduct and that it was necessary to cancel the exercise to enthrone credibility in the process, an official briefed on the matter told PREMIUM TIMES.
The supplementary election will be conducted in due date.
