Ali-Ndume-Fuel-Subsidy-SenateMore than half of the N522.3 billion fuel subsidy claims approved by the National Assembly in the 2015 supplementary budget were fictitious, the Senate Leader, Senator Ali Ndume (APC/Borno South) has revealed.

Recall that both chambers of the National Assembly had last week Tuesday passed a supplementary budget of N574.5 billion.

The figure consisted of the earlier N465.6 billion budget including N413 billion fuel subsidy claim carried over from last quarter of 2014 as well as the period from January to September 2015 sent by President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Senate added N108.9 billion to the figure as additional fund meant to cover fuel subsidy claims for the last quarter of 2015.

This brought the entire fuel subsidy approved by the Senate to N522.3 billion.

Speaking in an interview with Daily Trust yesterday, Ndume said the marketers were using the subsidy   to blackmail   Nigerians.

“Any time the claims get to a certain level, they will stop supplying fuel, the queues will resurface and everything will become very difficult in the country. Thus, the government will be forced to pay the claims whether they are right or not.

“If you check, the claim of the N522.3bn, I’m very sure that more than half of it, is just fictitious claims but we have to pay because we are depending on them to meet our fuel needs. And by extension, the lives of Nigerians are dependent on them”, the Senate leader said.
