President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday expressed deep regret over the death of tens of people in Anambra State, following an industrial gas explosion on Christmas Eve.
While the police put the casualty figure of the industrial gas explosion that occurred at the Inter Corp Oil limited (LPG Plant) facility, a subsidiary of Chikason Group, in Nnewi, Nnewi Local Government Area of Anambra State at eight, unofficial figures peg the number at over a 100 persons.
According to residents of Nnewi, several buildings, over 60 vehicles and more than 50 motorcycles were burnt beyond recognition in the industrial gas explosion, where more than 20 other people sustained injuries.
The fire was reportedly caused by an explosion when a truck was discharging its contents at the LPG plant.
In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President said he was greatly shaken and shocked by such large-scale loss of human lives in a single industrial accident, which casts a gloom on the families of the victims “who were looking forward to a joyous Christmas celebration”.
President Buhari extended his condolences to the families of the victims, the people and the government of Anambra State over what he described as an “unfortunate tragedy on Christmas Eve”.
“My heart and prayers go out to these grieving families at this difficult and painful moment”, the president added.
