Camps, Not Factions Exist In PDP – Dep. Nat’l Legal Adviser

PDPThe opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday acknowledged the existence of ‘camps’ within its ranks, not factions, as widely reported by a national daily.

The Deputy National Legal Adviser of the PDP, Barrister Bashir Maidugu, who made the clarification, said while it is true that there are differences within the leadership of the party, said it was erroneous to say the party had split into factions.

According to the newspaper report which elicited the clarification by Maidugu, the ongoing probe and trial of chieftains of the PDP in connection with the over $2.1 billion arms fund, had split the former ruling party into four factions with each battling for the soul of the main opposition party.

One of the factions, the report noted, has sympathy for former President Goodluck Jonathan; another for the acting national chairman, Uche Secondus and his group in the NWC; another headed by some of the governors and the Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, while the fourth faction was created by the deputy national officers of the party.

Those in the latter group include the PDP deputy national publicity secretary, Barrister Abdullahi Jalo, deputy national youth leader Hon. Dennis Alonge-Niyi,‎ deputy national legal adviser, Barrister Bashir Maidugu and deputy ‎national organising secretary, Mr. Okey ‎Nnaedozie

Reacting to the report, Barr. Maidugu said: “Yes, there are camps in the PDP because of some issues but not factions. When you say factions, it means each group is seeking for recognition, or wants to form a different party and this is not the problem”.

“What we are trying to do is to ensure sanity, rule of law and transparency in the party, and once these things are addressed, all these camps will automatically collapse into one camp. Nobody is saying he wants to put on a different party”, he added.
