A MAGNIFICENT 30ft sperm whale has died on a Norfolk beach despite a bitter battle to save its life. The 30ft gentle giant of the deep was battered and bruised when it came to rest on the sands as its life sadly ebbed away with the tide last night (Fri). The 20-tonne whale was one of four seen swimming off Hunstanton, north Norfolk, yesterday afternoon. Three of the pod appeared to swim away to safety but this one became stranded beneath the cliffs at the popular Victorian seaside resort.

A 45ft-long sperm whale thrashed around helplessly on a rocky shore before dying on a beach popular with holidaymakers.

Coastguard and expert divers battled hard to save the life of the 30-tonne mammal but in the end there was nothing they could do to coax it back into deeper water.

The bull whale was stranded beneath cliffs along the coast at Hunstanton, in Norfolk, and died an hour and a half before low tide just before midnight, after becoming trapped on Friday afternoon.

According to Daily Mail, it was one of up to six sperm whales which were first seen dangerously close to the shore in shallow waters off Hunstanton at 3.30pm.

The whale got stuck along with another which managed to free itself and swim away to safety with the rest of the pod.
