Hi NGTrends Readers,
I am 25 living at home with my father. After a rocky relationship ended almost two years ago, I was forced to sell my house and my father was kind enough to allow me to move back home to get back on my feet. After nine months of working my butt off to get caught up, pay down debt and save some money, I am finally in a situation where I am able to move out of my father’s home. My boyfriend (the most amazing “they don’t make them like this anymore” man I have ever met) and I are going to move in together in August. We have found an apartment and signed the lease.
I am mortified to tell my father. While he is a kind man, he tends to think about money and himself before the happiness of others. I pay part of the bills and buy groceries for the household, as well as help with his dog who has special needs. I need advice on how to start the conversation to tell him that I will no longer be living with him, and will be moving fifty miles away. I have always felt the need to help take care of him because he raised me on his own and he has a few health issues (nothing serious).
I know that as an adult, I shouldn’t be afraid to tell my father something, but he is not always the most understanding man, and I do not want this to have a negative impact on my relationship with him.
