NgTrends Opinion: Linda Ikeji And Celebrities Should Be Careful What They Show Off On Social Media
Yesterday June 22nd 2016, unconfirmed sources reported claims that the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) slapped popular blogger Linda Ikeji with a tax bill of 75 million naira.
However the popular blogger exclusively told Pulse that she hasn’t been slapped any tax bill and her Banana Island Mansion is 1000% hers as they were claims that she denied being the owner when asked about the mansion by FIRS.
A big lesson is to be learnt from this Linda’s case. Even as she came out to denies some reports, celebrities and media personalities should be very careful with what they show off on social media or even if you still really want to show off just how much you’ve got then better pay your tax first.
One day, the time will come when you have to give to Caesar what you have been showing off on social media. A typical example is America where Caesar picks celebrities that are debitors to tax payment like fun, showing that nobody is above the way but in Nigeria, people over the years have been able to go without paying tax and with the Nigeria we have now, there just might come a day of reckoning. With the President Buhari’s led government who is against corruption and looking for funds to run the country, the day of reckoning might just be around the corner.
The things you’ve shown off and still showing off will all be accounted on that day. Caesar will look as deep as the amount in your bank account so there is no hiding from it when it comes. As an extremely materialistic society that Nigeria is, where it is normal to show off your latest car, latest house or expensive watch, this is the only way for people to know you are successful is how much you spent and have in your account. So with this mindset, celebrities want to show how far they have come in life and prove to themselves that they are keeping up with the good things of life.
Now nobody says you shouldn’t show off, that’s Nigerian index for successful but just before you do that ask yourself one question ”Have I paid my tax?”. The answer to that will determine how you will show off or not.
