The Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) group has rejected calls to end attacks on oil facilities and to enter into talks with the government to address their grievances, Reuters news agency reports.
On Sunday, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (Mend), a powerful militant group in the oil-rich south until it reached a peace deal with the government in 2009, urged the NDA to negotiate and stop attacks that have cut Nigeria’s oil output to a 20-year low.
“Mend is a phased out body,” an NDA representative told Reuters in a text message, as he dismissed its appeal for talks.
“It’s just some political jargon to confuse the general public,” he added.
