Table Tennis: Onaolapo joins Portugal’s ADC Ponta Do Pargo

Ojo-OnaolapoA senior national table tennis player, Ojo Onaolapo, has joined four other Nigerians who secured clubs in Europe to play professionally.

Onaolapo was reportedly signed-up for one year by ADC Ponta Do Pargo, Portugal.

Already, four other Nigerians, Sunday Odunlade, Cecilia Otu-Akpan, Janet Friday and Jide Ogidiolu are playing for the club.

Also, Olajide Omotayo and Kazeem Makanjuola moved to Marcozzi Table tennis Club of Italy this season.

Onaolapo also said his target was to help the club win the Portugal Cup, a feat Quadri Aruna achieved with Sporting Lisbon this year.

He said, “It has been my wish for so long to play in Portugal. I have been on the process for long and I am glad it came to pass.

“For me, they play fantastic table tennis in Portugal and I am here to learn and make a mark. My mission is to justify my signing by the club.”

Onaolapo is making his second appearance in professional table tennis.

In 2014/2015, he played for Marcozzi Table Tennis Club of Italy and emerged the 2014 champion of Italian Table Tennis League.

The competition is an annual event to determine Italy’s top three players in both divisions one and two.

The top 16 in division two at the end of competition will move to division one.

The player said that he would be building on the basic rudiments and exposure he got in Italy and Nigeria.

Onaolapo once played for Sunshine Table Tennis Club of Akure.

NAN reports that Onaolapo was instrumental to Nigeria clinching a bronze medal at the table tennis team event of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

He won the 2014 U-21 International Table Tennis Federation Nigeria Open.
