WhatsApp is on Tuesday officially launching a video calling for its over 1 billion users worldwide on iOS, Android, and Windows Phone. This update poses a significant threat to Skype and Apple’s Facetime.

The one-to-one video calling will become available to all users on Android, iOS and Windows devices in the next few days, WhatsApp said.

With the update, users will be given the option to start a video or voice call when they tap on the phone icon in the top right-hand corner of a conversation.

“We’re introducing this feature because we know that sometimes voice and text just aren’t enough. There’s no substitute for watching your grandchild take her first steps, or seeing your daughter’s face while she’s studying abroad.

“And we want to make these features available to everyone, not just those who can afford the most expensive new phones or live in countries with the best cellular networks,” said a WhatsApp spokesman.

This feature will be available to every WhatsApp enabled phone that has a camera.

“…we want to make these features available to everyone, not just those who can afford the most expensive new phones or live in countries with the best cellular networks,” the company said in its announcement published today.

You may not see the update immediately as the rollout is strategic and will come out over the next couple of days, country by country.
